Pre-Festival Cultural Exchange: September 19th (Evening in Nanao)
The evening before the main event, you’ll be welcomed into the heart of the community. Join local festival participants for an intimate exchange session at a local community center. Here, you can meet the passionate individuals who dedicate themselves to this festival, learn about their preparations and the meaning behind each ritual, and share stories over light refreshments. This is your chance to build personal connections and feel the anticipation before the grand spectacle.
We will provide the detailed information, including the meeting time, location, and the program of the networking event, individually to those who have registered.
Festival Day Participation: September 20th (Main Festival in Nanao)

On the day of the festival, you’ll join the locals and contribute to the vibrant energy. While carrying the massive wakubata flags requires specialized training, you’ll have opportunities for active, hands-on involvement designed to give you an insider’s perspective:
・Procession Support: Walk alongside the main procession, experiencing the powerful rhythm and chants from within the heart of the festival. You may have the chance to assist with carrying smaller festival elements or equipment under local guidance. You’ll feel the ground tremble as the wakubata flags sweep past you.
・Wakubata Flag Practice Session Observation: Observe a special practice session where locals prepare the towering wakubata flags. You’ll gain insights into the immense teamwork and strength required. (Optional: If there’s a safe, supervised opportunity for guests to participate in an activity.)
・Traditional Shout & Chant Learning: Learn the basic calls and chants unique to the Okuma Kabuto Matsuri from locals and join in the communal energy. You’ll be part of the roar!
・ Behind-the-Scenes Access: Gain special access to areas typically unseen by general spectators, observing the meticulous preparations and dedication of the community. Witness firsthand the reverence and passion that goes into this ancient event.
・Cultural Interpretation: Our local guides will be on hand to provide real-time explanations of the rituals, symbols, and significance of each moment, enriching your understanding.
This isn’t a performance for tourists; it’s a genuine invitation to become a welcomed guest within a cherished radition. You’ll forge indelible memories and gain a deep appreciation for Nanao’s living heritage.
